Energy Quick Check

The Ministry of the Environment of Baden-Württemberg is financing a free Energy Quick Check for hospitals, rehabilitation facilities (each with up to 200 beds) and care institutions in Baden-Württemberg. This is carried out by the Chair of Facility Management at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). With the help of a benchmarking tool, your energy consumption is anonymously compared with other hospitals, rehabilitation and care facilities in Baden-Württemberg. Thanks to this free and simple tool, it is determined where there is potential for energy savings in your institution.

Motivation

Hospitals and nursing homes are facilities with above-average energy consumption. For example, a hospital consumes about as much energy per bed as two single-family homes. Various studies have shown potential savings of up to 30% in energy consumption.

However, savings can be achieved by investing in technical equipment and the building envelope in combination with efficient operational management. Smaller homes in particular, but also nursing homes, do not have the necessary resources and knowledge to install energy management or controlling.

Research objective

The methodical approach starts with the development of an "energy quick check" and leads to an evaluation of the technical equipment, the benchmarking of energy consumption and a concrete potential report for each hospital or nursing facility.

In order to ensure the long-term nature of the project, it will be possible for hospitals and nursing homes from Baden-Württemberg to participate in benchmarking for at least another 5 years after the end of the project.
