The overall objective of the DA³S joint project is to develop a method for the automatic detection and subsequent automated low-emission removal of detected asbestos-containing spacers, taking into account the special requirements in nuclear facilities. The project differs from existing approaches in that the spacers are not removed from the piles of demolition material, but instead are to be detected and removed
directly from the standing structure. This is to be carried out in accordance with both nuclear and radiation protection regulations and conventional waste and hazardous substance regulations. This allows the step to be integrated into the usual dismantling process and, in addition to subsequent removal from the demolition waste, offers a further remediation option prior to demolition. A particular challenge here is that
the concrete surfaces are usually covered with paint and coatings. Since it is not yet possible to detect concealed spacers, these must first be exposed by removing the coatings.
KIT-GIK is working on the implementation of a multi-sensor platform for the automatic detection of asbestos-containing spacers. KIT-TMB is responsible for research into the low-emission removal of spacers after their detection.
