The defined ablation of highly reinforced concrete is a main task required in the process of decommissioning of nuclear facilities. The selective ablation of contaminated material allows for the remaining material, which is usually the contamination-free bulk, to be returned to the general recycling cycle. However, it is problematic to achieve release measurement for local in-depth ablation of reinforced concrete; e.g. in cracks, gaps, and breaks.

In order to provide a solution to this problem, a combined ablation tool is being developed. This tool can both ablate unreinforced concrete layers using an oscillating undercutting method as well as reinforced areas using dry cutting techniques. To prevent cross-contamination of the remaining structures, the demolished material is immediately evacuated and carry-overs are avoided.

In addition to determining the optimal procedure, the focus lies on the automatic registration and evaluation of the sensory data of the material to be processed at a test stand.

The individual subsystems will all be joined in a demonstrator. Finally, the functional testing of the demonstrator will be executed at a KIT laboratory as well as the subsequent field tests and tests on real building parts.
